SUMMARY
Election Results 2024 LIVE updates: The BJP-led Mahayuti is inching towards a landslide victory in Maharashtra assembly elections while the JMM-led alliance is looking poised to retain power in Jharkhand.
BJP-led Mahayuti clinches landslide win in Maharashtra; INDIA bloc to retain power in Jharkhand.
The Bharatiya Janata Party was poised to win around 130 seats in Maharashtra while its allies, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP, were on on course to win around 96 seats together. The incumbent Mahayuti, expected to win around 225 seats, was headed to a commanding majority in the 288-member assmebly.
The trends suggest that Congress-Shiv Sena (UBT)-NCP (Sharad Pawar) alliance could be restricted to a meager 47 seats.
“I thank everybody for this victory. We have such a big victory because of the work Mahayuti did. Very grateful,” Maharashtra chief minister Eknath Shinde told reporters.
However, the Shiv Sena (UBT) alleged foul play. Party leader Sanjay Raut said, "I see a big conspiracy in this...This is not a mandate of Marathi 'manoos' and farmers. We do not accept this as people's mandate.”
The INDIA bloc found cause for celebration in Jharkhand, where voters favoured continuity. The Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) was leading in 34 of the 81 assembly seats, followed by the Congress with 16, and other allies including the RJD and CPI-ML gaining ground. The rival BJP is expected to win around 21 seats.
"We are going to get the reward for the work we did... and also for the manner in which we remained connected to the public. What can be seen in trends, we can say that we are going to form the govt again and the fulfil the promises we made," Congress leader Rajesh Thakur told PTI.
The BJP has emerged as the single largest party as the saffron party is leading in 124 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena is leading in 56 seats. Congress is likely to end up as the fourth largest party, behind all the three constituents of Mahayuti.
Priyanka Chaturvedi says, "The results have come as a surprise. The way our lead of 151 seats in Lok Sabha was reduced to this in the Assembly elections, a question arises how did such a difference come? All the surveys showed a close contest or Maha Vikas Aghadi was given an edge...I went to so many places in Maharashtra where people told me that they would vote for us but we should pay attention to EVMs. For me, mentally it is quite unacceptable and this type of result raises the question of whether this was truly a free and fair election?..."
"Voters in Maharashtra have ensured a big victory for Mahayuti. Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar, Ramdas Athawale contested the election very well under the leadership of PM Modi. People trusted Mahayuti as Eknath Shinde, Devendra Fadnavis, Ajit Pawar ensured that they provide people good infrastructure - Vande Bharat trains, Metro trains, roads and welfare schemes such as 'Ladli Bahana', 'Kisan Samman'. The voters of Balasaheb Thackeray did not like the way Sharad Pawar broke the alliance between BJP and Shiv Sena in 2019," says BJP leader Vinod Tawde.
INDIA bloc is leading in 50 assembly seats in Jharkhand while the BJP is leading in 27 seats.
Maharashtra CM & Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde says, "Let the final results come in...Then, in the same way as we fought elections together, all three parties will sit together and take a decision (on who will be the CM)."
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla hit back at Raut for claiming conspiracy in election results, saying he's suffering from mental bankruptcy and no one takes him seriously in Maharashtra.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut alleged that there was a "big conspiracy" and something was "fishy" in the Maharashtra assembly poll results as Mahayuti headed for a massive victory.
Former Jharkhand chief minister Champai Soren, now a BJP leader, is leading in Seraikella by 18,311 votes against Ganesh Mahali of JMM.
Shiv Sena candidate Milind Deora is leading against Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Aditya Thackeray in Worli by nearly 600 votes.
BJP-led Mahayuti is leading in 220 seats while the MVA comprising Congress, NCP(SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT) is leading just 57 consitutencies out of 288.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray is leading against Shiv Sena's Milind Deora by less than 400 votes after three rounds of counting.
Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is leading from Nagpur South West by over 7,600 votes after four rounds of counting.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is leading from Wayanad by over one lakh votes.
The JMM-led alliance in Jharkhand is leading in 37 seats while BJP-led NDA is leading in 23 seats, according to EC data.
The BJP-led Mahayuti, leading in 171 seats, has crossed the halfway mark in Maharashtra in initial trends, according to Election Commission, looking poised to form the next government.
