GST mop-up rises 6.5% in August to ₹1.86 lakh crore; net revenue up 10.7%

India’s gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose 6.5% year-on-year to ₹1,86,315 crore in August 2025, even as revenues from imports declined marginally, the Finance Ministry said on Monday.

In August 2024, the gross GST collection stood at ₹1,74,962 crore. Last month, the collection was ₹1.95 lakh crore, while the all-time high of ₹2.37 lakh crore was recorded in April this year.

Of the total collections in August, Central GST accounted for ₹34,076 crore, State GST ₹42,854 crore, Integrated GST ₹97,186 crore, and compensation cess ₹12,199 crore.

Revenues from domestic transactions grew 9.6% year-on-year to ₹1.36 lakh crore, compared to ₹1.25 lakh crore in the same month last year. GST revenues from imports, however, contracted by 1.2% to ₹49,354 crore.

After accounting for refunds, net GST revenue stood at ₹1,66,956 crore in August, an increase of 10.7% over the same month last year. Net revenue from domestic transactions rose by 13.5% to ₹1.25 lakh crore, while net revenue from imports grew by 3% to ₹41,008 crore.

The total refunds in August fell 19.9% to ₹19,359 crore, compared to ₹24,170 crore in the same month last year. Domestic refunds dropped by 21.4%, while export refunds were lower by 17.9%.

State-wise performance

Among major states, Andhra Pradesh posted the highest growth at 21%, followed by Bihar and Karnataka (15% each), Punjab and Rajasthan (14% each), and Haryana and Telangana (12% each). Smaller states such as Sikkim (39%), Meghalaya (35%), and Andaman & Nicobar Islands (35%) also recorded strong growth.

On the other hand, Manipur (-24%), Chandigarh (-12%), and Jharkhand (-1%) reported a decline in GST revenues.

Maharashtra remained the largest contributor with ₹28,900 crore, followed by Karnataka with ₹14,204 crore and Gujarat with ₹10,992 crore.
