In the latest trade escalation, United States President Donald Trump said he will announce 25% tariffs on all aluminium and steel products entering the country on Monday.

Trump also said that he would declare reciprocal tariffs on trading partners that tax imports from the US later this week, The Guardian reported.

"If they charge us, we charge them," he said.

Trump's plan to charge 25% tariffs on steel and aluminium imports is likely to have a major impact on Canada and Mexico, which are the biggest steel trading partners of the US.

During his first term, Trump imposed tariffs of 10% on aluminium and 25% on steel from Mexico, Canada, and the European Union. However, he later granted duty-free quotas to several trading partners.

"Any steel coming into the United States is going to have a 25% tariff," POTUS said while speaking to media on Sunday.

Reacting to the development, Canadian Innovation Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, in a post on X, said, "Let's all be clear. Canadian steel and aluminum support key industries in the US from defence, shipbuilding and auto. This is making North America more competitive and secure. We will continue to stand up for Canada, our workers, and our industries."

Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, slammed Trump for "shifting goal posts and constant chaos".

"This is the next four years. Shifting goalposts and constant chaos, putting our economy at risk. I'm asking the people for a strong, stable, four-year mandate that outlasts the Trump administration to do whatever it takes, to always be ready to protect Ontario," he said on X.

Earlier this month, Trump threatened to impose a 25% import duty on products from Canada and Mexico but subsequently delayed the plan for a month after speaking with the leaders of both countries.
