Telecom subscription data: Reliance Jio retains top position with 486 million subscribers

Jio retains top position in India's telecom industry

On Tuesday, the Telecom Authority of India (TRAI) released the telecom subscription data for May 31, 2024. According to the data, the total broadband subscribers grew by 0.72% monthly to 935.1 million in May 2024. Urban Telephone subscribers grew 0.15% monthly to 665.9 million, while rural telephone subscribers saw a monthly growth of 0.28% to 537.80 million. Total telephone subscribers saw an additional 2.47 million, totalling 1,203.69 million. The total number of active wireless subscribers at the end of May 2024 reached 1,059.73 million.

Jio retained its position as the leading telecom provider, adding 2.58 million subscribers in May 2024, bringing its total subscriber base to 486.62 million. Airtel was the second largest telecom provider, adding 2.69 million subscribers, bringing the total subscriber base to 278.10 million.

Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea's subscriber base rose to 126.44 million as it added 0.86 million subscribers. Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and Atria Convergence Technologies’ subscriber bases stood at 25.54 million and 2.26 million, respectively. According to TRAI data, at the end of May 2024, Jio had the highest number of wired broadband subscribers, at 12 million, compared to 11.62 million in the previous month. Airtel was the second largest wired broadband provider, with 7.95 million subscribers. Meanwhile, BSNL was the third largest wired broadband subscriber, with its subscriber base coming in at 4.18 million.

The TRAI subscription data revealed that Jio had 52.04% of the total market share of the wired and wireless services, while Airtel accounted for 29.74% at the end of May 2024. Vodafone Idea took 13.61% of the market share, while BSNL, Atria Convergence, and others made up the remainder.
