T. V. Narendran is the CEO & Managing Director of Tata Steel Limited.

Tata Steel’s global CEO and managing director T.V. Narendran is widely expected to be appointed to the board of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, the Economic Times reported on Thursday, citing senior executives.

Narendran, 60, is understood to have recently met Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran at Bombay House in Mumbai to discuss the appointment, the paper said.

The expected appointment follows the exit of several directors.

Former Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth stepped down this month on turning 70, while independent director Leo Puri resigned in April and Ajay Piramal, also 70, left last month.

The Tata Sons board, which includes executive, non-executive and independent directors, has evolved since it was restructured in 2016 after the removal of former chairman Cyrus Mistry.

Current members include Noel Tata, Vijay Singh, Venu Srinivasan, Harish Manwani and Anita M. George.

Who is T.V. Narendran?

Narendran, who joined Tata Steel in 1988 after completing an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta, became managing director in 2013. Under his leadership, the steelmaker acquired Bhushan Steel and expanded its Kalinganagar plant, among other marquee moves.

He chairs Tata Steel Europe and sits on the boards of Tata International and Tata Steel Limited. He is also the chairman of the World Steel Association for 2024-25, senior vice president of the All India Management Association and a fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

Narendran has held leadership roles in industry bodies including the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Indian Institute of Metals. He serves on the boards of Xavier School of Management and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, and is a member of the Council of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

A mechanical engineer from the National Institute of Technology, Trichy, Narendran has received distinguished alumnus awards from both NIT Trichy and IIM Calcutta. He is also a Chevening Scholar and attended the Advanced Management Programme at INSEAD, France.
