Bank holidays are generally observed on the second and fourth Saturdays of a month, along with the four Sundays. Several bank customers, however, raised queries on whether lenders are operating this Saturday, April 20, as the festival of Garia Puja is being observed in some parts of the country.

Since this Saturday is the third Saturday, banks are opened in all states and union territories, except for Tripura.

Bank holiday in Tripura

In the northeastern state, the lenders are shut as the Tripura government has notified a public holiday on the occasion of Garia Puja. The festival is observed by a vast section of the population residing in the state.

The branches of both, public and private lenders, are closed in Tripura today on account of the festival.

When is the next bank holiday?

According to the holiday calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the next bank holiday will be observed in Bengaluru on April 26, when the city will vote in the second phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024. The central bank has decided to notify bank holidays in some of the cities on dates when the voting for the general elections will be held. For example, banks in Dehradun, Chennai, Shillong and other cities were closed on April 19 due to the first phase of polling.

The next pan-India bank holiday will be observed on May 1, marked as Labour Day. The date is also celebrated as Maharashtra Day and Gujarat Day.

April bank holidays

The month of April was marked by an array of bank holidays, due to several festivals. The cumulative count of holidays, including the four Sundays and two Saturdays, stretched up to 14. However, the state-wise count of holidays differed as states and union territories issued a different list of public holidays depending on the observance of the festivals in their respective regions.

The following festivals and public holidays were observed during the month: Gudhi Padwa/Ugadi Festival/Telugu New Year's Day/Sajibu Nongmapanba (Cheiraoba)/1st Navratra, Shree Ram Navami (Chaite Dasain), Garia Puja, Jumat-ul-Vida, Ramzan-Id (EId-Ul-Fitr), Bohag Bihu/Cheiraoba/Baisakhi/Biju Festival, and Bohag Bihu/Himachal Day.

On bank holidays, the routine deposit and withdrawal activities are suspended at the bank branches. However, net banking, mobile banking and ATM services remain unhindered.
