SUMMARY

India Post, in a key development, is all set to enable digital payments via the unified payment interface (UPI) system from August. A pilot program has already begun in Karnataka. The upgrade is under the implementation of a new IT system, IT 2.0.

Static QR codes at the point of sale (PoS) counters were discontinued due to several technical difficulties and customer complaints.

In a major step towards digitalisation, post offices in India will now start accepting digital payments at counters starting from August following the completion of the rollout of a new application in their IT system, a PTI report quoted official sources as saying.

Currently, post offices do not accept digital payments as they don’t have their accounts synced with a unified payment interface (UPI) system.

"The Department of Posts is implementing its IT infrastructure which will have new applications that are enabled to perform transactions with Dynamic QR Code. Rollout will be completed at all post offices by August 2025," the PTI report said, quoting an official source.

The rollout of the new system under IT 2.0 has begun on a trial basis in the Karnataka circle. QR-based booking of mail products was successfully carried out at the Mysore head office (HO), Bagalkot HO and its subordinate offices.

While the Department of Post had initially introduced static QR codes at the point of sale (PoS) counters at post offices to enable digital transactions, it was discontinued later due to continuous technical difficulties and customer complaints.

Post office customers have time and again expressed their frustration over the lack of digital payment options, often forcing them to run to nearby ATMs during their visits to post offices. With this, India Post will be able to offer a much more user-friendly experience with convenience to its users.
