Modi, who will undertake a walkthrough of the newly built facility around 3 pm, is expected to inaugurate the project at 3:30 pm and address a gathering at the site. He will also launch several infrastructure initiatives in Mumbai during his two-day visit to Maharashtra from October 8–9.

Here are 10 key facts about the new airport:

1. India’s largest greenfield airport: The Navi Mumbai airport, spread over 1,160 hectares, is designed to handle 90 million passengers annually and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo at full capacity. Described as India’s largest greenfield airport project, it features advanced automation, sustainability measures, and passenger-centric innovations.
2. India’s first fully digital airport: Navi Mumbai International Airport will offer pre-booking of parking slots, online check-in, digital baggage drop and immigration services. Passengers can also use “virtual queuing” to reserve time slots for security checks.
3. Paperless and AI-enabled systems: The airport will feature automated processes from check-in to boarding. Artificial intelligence tools will track baggage, sending real-time updates to passengers’ phones.
4. Green and sustainable: The airport will generate 47 megawatts of solar power, use electric vehicles for airside operations, and incorporate rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling.
5. Advanced transport links: The airport will also become the first in the country to be connected by a water taxi service.
6. Flood and climate resilience: The airport has been elevated by 8.5 metres to withstand extreme weather events such as a 100-year flood or cloudburst.
7. Commercial operations in December: Commercial operations at the 1,160-hectare facility are expected to begin in December after 45–60 days of security and systems testing, AAHL Chief Executive Officer Arun Bansal told reporters earlier this week.
8. Boost for airlines and MRO sector: Several airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and Akasa, have confirmed plans to operate from NMIA. The site will also house India’s largest aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility.
9. Naming after D.B. Patil: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the airport will be named “Loknete D.B. Patil Navi Mumbai International Airport,” honouring the late farmer leader who championed land rights during the city’s development. The announcement came after local leaders and project-affected families renewed their demand for naming the airport after Patil.
10. Airport code: Navi Mumbai International Airport will carry the airport code ‘NMI’.
