In a post on X, Modi said he welcomed the agreement amid concerns over its economic impact and loss of lives during the conflict.

"I welcome the understanding reached between the United States and Iran on ending the conflict in West Asia, which has caused serious economic disruption across the world and led to loss of life in many countries," the prime minister said.

"India hopes that the implementation of this understanding will help restore peace and stability in the region and ensure the freedom of navigation and commerce," he said.

"We look forward to deliberations on the remaining issues reaching a sustainable final agreement," Modi added.

The remarks came hours after US President Donald Trump announced that a peace deal with Iran had been completed and said he was authorising the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and the removal of a US naval blockade.

"The Deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

He said he had authorised the "toll free opening" of the Strait of Hormuz and the immediate removal of the US naval blockade, adding: "Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow!"

In a separate post, Trump described the accord as a breakthrough that would bring "Peace and Security to the whole Region" and said the strategic waterway would reopen after the agreement is formally signed later this week.

The White House has not yet released the text of the agreement, while Iranian officials have indicated that implementation would begin only after a formal signing ceremony.
