FASTag is a device that uses RFID technology to make the toll payment directly while the vehicle is in motion. It curbs cash transactions at the booth and leads to a more efficient toll-collection process.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari had earlier announced the government's plans to introduce a GPS-based toll collection system. This system would replace the current FASTag system which uses a RFID to automatically cut toll payments at toll plazas. However, any concrete plans or timeframe to launch such a system has not been revealed.
