The flagship rooftop solar (RTS) scheme, launched in February 2024, aims to install solar systems in one crore residential households by 2026-27 with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore.

As of December 9, 2025, a total of 19.45 lakh rooftop solar systems have been installed nationwide, benefiting about 24.35 lakh households, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha.

Of these, 7,71,580 consumers have reported zero electricity bills after installing rooftop solar systems under the scheme, the minister said.

To make rooftop solar installations economically viable for households, the Centre provides central financial assistance along with collateral-free loans at an interest rate of 5.75 per cent, linked to the repo rate, Naik said.

The government has also issued guidelines for installing rooftop solar systems under the Utility-Led Aggregation (ULA) and RESCO models to promote adoption among rural households and economically weaker sections, he added.

Among states, Gujarat leads the adoption with over 4.93 lakh rooftop solar installations, benefiting more than 7.1 lakh households, followed by Maharashtra with over 3.63 lakh installations and Uttar Pradesh with more than 3.02 lakh installations.

Kerala, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh have also reported significant uptake under the scheme, according to the data shared in Parliament.

The PM Surya Ghar scheme is a key part of India’s push to expand renewable energy capacity and reduce household electricity costs through decentralised solar generation.
