Mumbai rain: BMC urges people not to step out of homes unless necessary

The BMC has declared a holiday for all the BMC, government, private schools and colleges in Mumbai for the first session.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the civic body of Mumbai, has advised citizens to not step out of the house unless necessary amid heavy rainfall on Monday, July 8.

In a statement issued in the morning, BMC said that its entire machinery is working on the field in the wake of continuous rains. In case of an emergency, citizens can call 1916 for immediate assistance.

"The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mumbai today. In the wake of continuous rains, the entire machinery of the BMC is working on the field. Mumbaikar are requested not believe in any rumours. Also, I will step out of the house only if necessary. In case of an emergency, call 1916 for immediate assistance," the civic body said.

Local train services on the Central Railway (CR) routes were hit Monday morning due to heavy rainfall overnight.

The BMC has also declared a holiday for all the BMC, government, private schools and colleges in Mumbai for the first session. "The decision for the next session will be announced after reviewing the situation," the statement said.

Low-cost carrier IndiGo, in an advisory, said that flights to and from Mumbai are affected by downpour. It advised flyers to opt for an alternate flight or claim a full refund.

The civic body said some localities in Mumbai received over 300 mm of rainfall from 1 am to 7 am on Monday.

The highest 315 mm rainfall in the period mentioned was recorded in Govandi and 314 mm in Powai, it said.
