Managed by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), MIAL said that the redevelopment plan will be executed with minimal disruption to operations. During the construction period, Terminal 2 (T2) will manage the additional traffic.

"In November 2025, the transformation of Terminal 1 will proceed in carefully planned phases, ensuring minimal disruption. During the construction, Terminal 2 (T2) will shoulder the additional traffic," MIAL said in a release.

The initial phase involves demolishing the existing structure, followed by the construction of a new terminal. Once completed, the revamped T1 will handle 20 million passengers annually, a 42 per cent boost in capacity, the release said.

The redevelopment is expected to be completed by 2028-29. To address the temporary capacity gap, T2 and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport will handle the displaced passenger load, it added.

The Navi Mumbai International Airport, also being developed by the Adani Group, is scheduled to begin operations this year.

"The team at CSMIA is working tirelessly with our stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, with minimum disruption to daily operations or passenger experience. This redevelopment is not only about expanding capacity—it is about future proofing our city’s place on the global stage," AAHL Director Jeet Adani said.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) recently announced that Terminal 2 (T2) at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) will temporarily close for 4-6 months in FY 2025-26 to undergo a comprehensive overhaul. The work is expected to conclude in the September quarter of 2025-26.
