This year, Muharram began on June 27, and the 10th day (Ashura) would fall on July 6.

The first month in the Islamic Calendar, Muharram, is a time of mourning and reflection for the Muslim community. It symbolises sacrifice, unity, peace and harmony, and is one of the four sacred months in Islam where warfare is forbidden.

After the month of Ramadan, Muharram is the second-holiest month in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar. During this time, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, Hazrat Imam Hussain, is commemorated.

The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, is observed as the day of mourning. On this day, while Shia Muslims commemorate the death of Hazrat Imam Hussain by engaging in self-flagellation, Sunni Muslims mark it by fasting and offering prayers.

This year, Muharram began on June 27, and the 10th day would fall on July 6. As July 6 is a Sunday, there would be no separate public holiday for the same. So, all government offices, post offices, schools and other public institutions will remain open on Monday, July 7.

This means that markets will also remain open on July 7, and BSE and NSE will function as usual.
