Muharram 2024 holiday: Are stock market and banks closed on July 17?

Public and private banks will remain closed on Wednesday, July 17, in view of the holiday declared for Muharram (Ashura) by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The stock markets will also remain shut, as per the holiday calendars issued by the NSE and the BSE.

Muharram 2024 bank holiday

On July 17, the banks will remain closed in several states and union territories, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Mizoram, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Andaman and Nicobar, Telangana, Bihar, Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Maharashtra.

Apart from Muharram, Meghalaya will also observe U Tirot Sing Day, commemorating the legacy of freedom fighter U Tirot Sing.

Mobile and net banking services will be available despite the public and private lenders being closed.

Stock market to remain closed

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE will be closed for trading on Wednesday. The stock exchanges will resume trading on Thursday, July 18.

MCX and NCDEX on Muharram 2024

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will not be live for trading from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday. However, trading operations will resume in the evening session (5 a.m. to 9 p.m.).

Due to Muharram, NCDEX, or National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Limited, will be closed for trading.

Government offices and educational institutions

Government offices, as well as educational institutions in several states, will also observe a holiday on July 17.

After July 17, the stock market will observe the next public holiday on August 15, Independence Day.
