The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on Tuesday clarified that biometric Aadhaar authentication (e-KYC) for LPG consumers is not mandatory for all users, amid confusion triggered by an earlier communication.

In a statement, the ministry said the requirement applies only to those consumers who have not completed e-KYC so far, stressing that “this is not a fresh direction” but part of an ongoing exercise to streamline beneficiary identification.

“If you are a non-PMUY customer and have done it before, you don’t need to do it again,” the ministry said.

It added that Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries are required to complete e-KYC once every financial year, and only to receive targeted direct benefit transfer (DBT) subsidies after seven refills.

The ministry also underlined that LPG supply remains unaffected.

“Supply of refills is not affected in any case,” it said.

The clarification comes after an earlier post by the ministry on X stated that “all domestic LPG consumers are required to complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (e-KYC)”, triggering confusion among users.

Meanwhile, the government said LPG refill bookings have moderated to about 77 lakh, down from 88.8 lakh earlier, indicating that panic-driven demand is easing.

In a separate daily update, the government said there is no shortage of petrol, diesel or cooking gas, and supplies remain stable across the country.

“All domestic refineries are operating at high capacity and maintaining adequate crude oil inventories,” the government said, noting that there have been no dry-outs at fuel retail outlets or LPG distributorships.

The ministry has also amended LPG supply rules to bar households with piped natural gas (PNG) connections from availing subsidised domestic LPG.

Under the revised provisions notified on March 14, consumers with PNG connections must surrender their LPG connections and will no longer be eligible for refills from government oil companies.

Oil marketing companies have also been directed not to issue new LPG connections or refill cylinders for such consumers.
