Linda Yaccarino, who succeeded Musk as CEO in June 2023 following his acquisition of Twitter—later rebranded as X—oversaw sweeping changes.

Linda Yaccarino on Wednesday announced that she is stepping down as chief executive officer of X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, after two years in the role.

“After two incredible years, I’ve decided to step down as CEO of X,” Yaccarino posted on the platform. “I’m immensely grateful to [Elon Musk] for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App.”

Yaccarino, who joined X months after Musk’s turbulent $44 billion takeover of Twitter in late 2022, oversaw sweeping changes including job cuts, revamped advertising policies, and a new subscription-based revenue model.

Under her leadership, the company also expanded features such as Community Notes and prepared to launch X Money, its upcoming payments service.

“I’m incredibly proud of the X team — the historic business turnaround we have accomplished together has been nothing short of remarkable,” she wrote.

Prior to joining X, Yaccarino served as chairperson of global advertising and partnerships at NBCUniversal, where she had worked since 2011. Before that, she spent nearly two decades at Turner, holding roles including executive vice president and COO of advertising sales, marketing, and acquisitions.

Yaccarino is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, where she studied liberal arts and telecommunications.

Yaccarino did not specify her future plans but said she would continue to support the company from afar.

“I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world,” she wrote. “As always, I’ll see you on X.”

No immediate announcement was made regarding her successor.
