Indian carriers including Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express and SpiceJet cancelled flights on Wednesday but assured flexible rescheduling and full refunds for affected passengers.

The Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, which was shut due to unrest in Nepal, will reopen from today, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) announced on Wednesday.

“We hereby inform that the flights suspended due to adverse circumstances would now be lifted, which has been made in accordance with the decision of the Tribhuvan International Airport Security Committee meeting held today,” CAAN said in a statement.

The authority advised passengers to contact their respective airlines for updated flight information and to carry official tickets and identification documents while travelling.

On Wednesday, Indian carriers including Air India, Air India Express, IndiGo and SpiceJet cancelled their services to and from Kathmandu as the airport remained closed amid political turmoil in the neighbouring nation.

Air India said its 12 scheduled flights to and from the Nepalese capital on September 10 were cancelled and that it was “closely monitoring the situation” for further updates.

IndiGo, in a post on X, said all flights to and from Kathmandu would remain cancelled until 1800 hours on September 10 due to the extended closure. It added that flexible options, including rescheduling and waivers, were available for affected passengers until September 12.

Air India Express also cancelled its Kathmandu services on Wednesday, offering customers travelling up to September 17 the option to reschedule without any fees or fare difference, or claim a full refund.

"In view of the prevailing situation in Nepal, we are offering guests booked to travel to or from Nepal up to 17th September 2025, the support and flexibility to freely reschedule their journeys to any future travel date with a complete waiver of change fees or any fare difference,” the airline said in a statement.

“Alternatively, guests who elect to cancel their bookings for these dates would receive a full refund to their original mode of payment or travel agent.”

The airline added that its operations to and from Nepal would remain unhindered beyond Thursday.

SpiceJet too had announced cancellations for Wednesday.

The disruption came as Nepal grappled with political unrest. The Nepal Army on Wednesday imposed restrictive orders and a nationwide curfew to prevent violence after Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli resigned following widespread anti-government protests.
