India's retail inflation rises to 4.38% in June; food inflation accelerates to 5.32%

India's retail inflation rose to 4.38% in June from 3.93% in May on the back of higher food prices, according to official data released on Monday.

Food inflation, measured by the Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI), also accelerated to 5.32% in June from 4.78% in May.

Rural food inflation stood at 5.45%, while urban food inflation was 5.09%.

Overall rural inflation accelerated to 4.74% from 4.25% in May, while urban inflation rose to 3.92% from 3.53%.

Among individual items, silver jewellery recorded the highest annual inflation at 133.21%, followed by ginger at 50.41%, gold, diamond and platinum jewellery at 36.82%, tomatoes at 31.92%, and raisins and monacca at 20.52%.

Housing inflation was 2.10% in June, with rural housing inflation at 2.66% and urban housing inflation at 1.90%.

The government has mandated the Reserve Bank of India to ensure that the headline inflation remains at 4%, with a margin of 2% on either side.
