"We are going to launch new products with guaranteed delivery of mail and parcels. There will be a 24-hour Speed Post service, which will ensure delivery of mail within 24 hours. Similarly, there will be a 48-hour Speed Post for delivery within 48 hours," Scindia said.

These services will be launched in January, he added.

He also said that there will be similar services for next-day delivery of parcels, ensuring that the parcel gets delivered the next day. This is a significant improvement from the current timeline of around 3-5 days.

The government aims to transform India Post from a 'cost centre' to a 'profit centre' by 2029, the minister said.

Speed Post new features

In September, India Post announced major upgrades for its premium postal service, Speed Post, that came into effect on October 1, 2025. The new features are:

  • OTP-based secure delivery
  • Online payment facility
  • SMS-based delivery notifications
  • Convenient online booking services
  • Real-time delivery updates
  • Registration facility

The Department of Posts also revised the tariff structure for Inland Speed Post to meet rising operational costs and invest in new innovations. The tariff was last revised in October 2012.

The base price for sending Inland Speed Post (documents) across the country, outside the sender’s local area, is now ₹47.

In August, India Post integrated Registered Post’s sorting infrastructure and processing with Speed Post. The integration was implemented starting in September. The registered post facility is now available through Speed Post as ‘add-ons’.

“In order to streamline mail operations, improve delivery timelines, and optimize logistics resources, the Department of Posts has rationalized its sorting infrastructure and unified the processing of both Registered and Speed Post items. This integration will enhance backend efficiency, reduce transit delays, and offer better connectivity across the network,” the Ministry of Communications said in a release on August 6.
