SUMMARY

The plant, built entirely under the Make-in-India initiative, is capable of producing approximately 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually.

Developed in partnership with L&T, the plant will produce around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually and is part of a larger 10 MW project announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in May 2025.

India on Thursday commissioned its first domestically built 1 megawatt (MW) green hydrogen plant at Deendayal Port in Kandla on Thursday, in a major milestone for its clean energy transition.

The facility, developed under the government’s Make-in-India programme, is the first megawatt-scale green hydrogen plant to become operational at an Indian port.

It is expected to produce around 140 metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually, according to an official readout.

The plant was inaugurated by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, who said the project exemplified the country’s progress in scaling up green hydrogen infrastructure and delivering complex projects with speed.

“DPA has turned that vision into reality, a shining example of speed, scale, and skill under Maritime India Vision 2030,” the minister said.

The hydrogen plant is part of a larger 10 MW green hydrogen project for which Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in May.

"The commissioning of the first 1 MW module within just four months, as part of the larger 10 MW project, reflects a new benchmark for implementation in India’s green hydrogen ecosystem," a release said.

The green hydrogen produced at the port will support decarbonisation efforts across maritime operations and contribute to the broader target of achieving net zero emissions by 2070.

Engineering and construction giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) was responsible for delivering the project.

Minister of State for Ports, Shantanu Thakur, said the project underlines India’s emerging leadership in clean energy and reflects its commitment to building a domestic hydrogen ecosystem.

“This is a proud moment not just for Gujarat, but for the entire country. The commissioning of this Green Hydrogen plant at DPA highlights India’s growing leadership in clean energy, innovation, and self-reliance. I congratulate the entire team for taking this bold step towards a sustainable maritime future,” he said.

India has set ambitious targets to become a global hub for green hydrogen, with plans to produce 5 million tonnes annually by 2030 under its National Green Hydrogen Mission.
