SUMMARY
Over the past decade, India’s solar capacity has surged 3450%, with a record 24.5 GW added in 2024 alone.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi credited government initiatives, including the PM SuryaGhar Muft Bijli Yojana, for driving growth in rooftop solar and large-scale projects.
India has achieved a milestone by surpassing 100 GW of installed solar power capacity, Union minister Pralhad Joshi said on Friday, reinforcing its position as a global leader in renewable energy.
Joshi hailed the achievement as a testament to India’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India’s energy journey over the past ten years has been historic and inspiring. Initiatives like solar panels, solar parks, and rooftop solar projects have brought about revolutionary changes. As a result, today India has successfully achieved the target of 100 GW of solar energy production,” the minister posted on X.
Highlighting the role of government initiatives, Joshi said the PM SuryaGhar Muft Bijli Yojana is a game-changer in sustainable energy, empowering households with clean power through rooftop solar solutions.
India’s solar power sector has witnessed extraordinary growth over the past decade, with capacity surging by 3450% from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2025. As of January 31, 2025, the country’s total installed solar capacity stands at 100.33 GW, with an additional 84.10 GW under implementation and 47.49 GW under tendering, according to government data.
Solar energy remains the dominant contributor to India’s renewable energy portfolio, accounting for 47% of the total installed renewable capacity. In 2024 alone, India added a record-breaking 24.5 GW of solar capacity, more than doubling the installations from 2023. Utility-scale solar capacity additions reached 18.5 GW in 2024, marking a nearly 2.8 times increase compared to the previous year.
Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh emerged as top-performing states.
The rooftop solar sector grew 53% with 4.59 GW of new capacity installed in 2024. The PM SuryaGhar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in 2024, has been pivotal in this growth, nearing 9 lakh rooftop solar installations across the country.
From a limited solar module production capacity of 2 GW in 2014, India has expanded to 60 GW by 2024 and is on track to achieve a solar module production capacity of 100 GW by 2030.
