The new GST reforms have induced a new wave of consumerism among buyers, as many important products have become cheaper in the new GST rate regime. Products from cheese to as big as cars have been revamped with reduced GST rates. However, certain categories that have high consumer interest have seen no change in the GST rates.

In the new GST regime, big consumer electronic products like television sets, refrigerators, air conditioners, dishwashers, washing machines and other small products like juicers, hair dryers, electric irons, and food grinders saw a reduced GST rate of 18% from 28%.

However, the key and major category of smartphones is kept unchanged in the GST 2.0 regime. Many buyers are waiting to buy new smartphones during the big discount periods offered by e-commerce platforms like Flipkart and Amazon. The key question that arises in the minds of consumers is will the iPhones will get cheaper post September 22.

GST on smartphones

As iPhones come under the category of smartphones, the GST on smartphones is unchanged at 18%. Along with smartphones, laptops also attract 18% GST and are kept unchanged under the new GST regime. So the iPhones or any other smartphones wont get cheaper under the new GST 2.0 regime. Smartphones alone contributed 30% of the overall consumer electronics market in 2022 and are expected to contribute higher in the coming years.

In addition, the share of iPhones in total smartphone sales has increased to 7-10% in 2024-25, as compared to 3-4% earlier in 2020-21. The rising demand for iPhones or, in general, smartphones, can be attributed to wider financial inclusion measures, easy accessibility to credit and higher aspirational living standards.

iPhone 17

The Apple fraternity is now looking for the iPhone 17 launch on September 19. The prices of Apple’s iPhone 17 are expected to be around ₹80,000 to ₹90,000, according to the media reports. The new iPhone 17 will attract 18% GST as the rates are unchanged for smartphones and laptops. However, for better deals on previous-generation iPhones, you can check e-commerce platforms.
