The move is expected to help farmers get better prices, improve market liquidity, manage stocks efficiently and prevent distress sales during the peak harvest season.

The government on Monday approved the export of an additional 25 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat to ensure better returns for farmers while maintaining stability in domestic markets.

The decision was taken after a comprehensive review of production estimates, stock availability and price trends.

“The Government of India has approved the export of an additional 25 Lakh Metric Tonnes (LMT) of wheat, reinforcing its commitment to ensuring remunerative returns for farmers while maintaining stability in domestic markets,” the official statement said.

Wheat acreage in the ongoing 2025-26 rabi season has risen to about 334.17 lakh hectares, compared to 328.04 lakh hectares in the previous year, indicating strong farmer interest supported by assured minimum support price (MSP) and procurement mechanisms.

“As per the Second Advance Estimates released by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare on 10 March 2026, wheat production for 2025–26 is estimated at 1202 LMT,” the statement said, adding that the comfortable production outlook and higher stock availability warranted additional exports.

Earlier this year, exports of 5 LMT of wheat products were cleared in January, followed by approval for another 5 LMT of wheat products and 25 LMT of wheat in February.

“With the latest round of approvals, a total of 50 LMT of Wheat and 10 LMT of Wheat products have now been permitted to exports,” it said.

The move is expected to improve market liquidity, enable better stock management and prevent distress sales during the peak arrival season.

“The latest decision to allow export of an additional 25 LMT of wheat is expected to enhance market liquidity, facilitate efficient stock management, and prevent distress sales during the peak arrival season,” the statement said.

The government added that it will continue to take calibrated steps to balance farmer interests with consumer needs while ensuring food security remains safeguarded.
