Google, the global technology behemoth, is on a layoffs spree since last year in a bid to improve its efficiency. The Silicon Valley-based company, in recent days, announced more job cuts to bring down its additional expenditure.
While confirming the latest round of layoffs, Google spokesperson Alex García-Kummert told a tech news portal that the employee count has been brought down in three internal teams.
“As we’ve said, we’re responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead,” the spokesperson told Tech Crunch, while apparently explaining the rationale behind the layoffs.
According to García-Kummert, Python, Dart and Flutter are among the teams that have faced a reduction in the employee count due to the latest round of layoffs.
The decision has been taken to make the company “more efficient”, the spokesperson reportedly said, adding that the layoffs are part of a reorganisation exercise. The overall rejig is aimed at “reducing bureaucracy and layers”, while allowing employees to concentrate on the company’s “most innovative and important advances”.
Python, the team that works on high-level, general-purpose programming language, reportedly has less than 10 members in the United States. Flutter is Google’s open-source UI software development kit, whereas Dart is a programming language developed by the company.
According to Google, the employees laid off were mainly involved in programming languages. They will be offered support and assistance to find jobs within any other internal department of the company, or outside of it, it said.
The exact count of employees laid off by Google, as part of the recent layoff exercise, was not revealed. In 2023, the company had sacked around 12,000 employees in 2023, and had announced that the layoffs in 2024 would be carried out in a phased manner.
