Google IO 2024 Event: Tech giant likely to announce Android 15, AI updates

Tech giant Google is slated to host the 2024 edition of its I/O developer conference, where consumers and investors will be keenly watching announcements across web, mobile, cloud and artificial intelligence.

The conference will be held on May 14, and will kickstart with a keynote address by CEO Sundar Pichai at 10.30 pm India Standard Time. Google will stream the event live on its YouTube page.

Android 15 expected to be unveiled

Among the key announcements that consumers are eyeing is the unveiling of Android 15. The newest build of Google’s open-source mobile operating system is expected to be launched along with its Pixel 9, likely in October 2025, according to Androidauthority.com.

The event is expected to showcase UI changes besides features such as partial screen sharing, extended satellite connectivity support, new camera features besides updates to health tech, Bluetooth and keyboard usability.

Boost to artificial intelligence features

Investors are anticipating that the Google I/O 2024 will announce a slew of products and integrations with respect to artificial intelligence built with its Gemini (previously Bard) large language model.

Google has been forced to up the AI ante following the launch of ChatGPT. Analysts believe Google was initially reluctant to introduce chatbots, afraid that it would eat into its nearly $200-billion search business.

Pixel 9 to be announced?

Google may announce its latest set of hardware lineups, including its next flagship phone, the Pixel 9.

The Pixel phones will also serve as a playground for Google’s experiments with integrating AI into phones. According to reports, the new Pixel phones may sport a new digital assistant called Pixie powered by Gemini, which could replace Google Assistant.
