Banks in several other states including Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and others will still observe the holiday on September 5 as per the RBI’s holiday calendar.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Thursday announced that the public holiday for banks in Maharashtra on account of Eid-e-Milad has been shifted from September 5 to September 8, following a state government decision to avoid overlap with Ganpati immersion processions.

In a notification, the central bank said all financial market operations, including transactions in government securities, foreign exchange, money markets and rupee interest rate derivatives, will now remain open on September 5. These operations will be suspended on September 8 in observance of the revised holiday.

The change follows a notification by Maharashtra’s General Administration Department, which rescheduled the Eid-e-Milad holiday for Mumbai and its suburbs.

“As a result, settlement of all outstanding transactions due on September 8 (Monday) will be postponed to September 9 (Tuesday),” the RBI said.

It further clarified that the settlement of the auction of the government dated securities held on September 4 will also take place on September 9.

The RBI added that the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) bids placed on September 4 will be reversed on September 5, while the liquidity windows will continue to function normally on all other days.

Banks, however, will remain closed on September 5 in several other states and Union Territories, including Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, New Delhi, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Mizoram, as per the central bank’s holiday calendar.

Banks will remain open on Friday in Goa, Bihar, Himachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Assam, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Odisha, Tripura, and Chandigarh.

The RBI’s notification, dated September 4, 2025, said: “The Government of Maharashtra has declared September 08, 2025, as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The public holiday on September 05, 2025, declared earlier has been cancelled.”

Accordingly, all transactions and settlements in government securities, foreign exchange, money markets and rupee interest rate derivatives will be suspended on September 8, it added.
