The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Friday, August 16, declared the dates of the assembly elections in the state of Haryana and the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir.

In Haryana, all the 90 assembly seats will be contested in a single phase on October 1. The results will be out on October 4, when the ECI has scheduled the counting of votes.

The notification for the polls in Haryana will be issued on September 5, and the last date of filing the nominations will be September 12, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar noted, while briefing the press in New Delhi.

The state has 2.01 crore electors, comprising 1.06 crore male voters and 95 lakh female voters, as per the data shared by the Commission.

3-phase polling in J&K

In Jammu & Kashmir, the voting will be held in three phases -- on September 19, September 25 and October 1. The results will be declared on October 4, along with the outcome of the Haryana assembly polls.

The notification for the first round of elections in J&K will be issued on August 20, and the last date for filing the nominations will be August 27.

Kishtwar, Ramban and Doda in Jammu; and Anantnag, Pulwama and Shopian in Kashmir Valley will be going to polls in the first phase of the elections.

For the second round, the notification will be issued on August 29, and the last date for submitting the nominations is September 5.

In this phase, Gandabal, Srinagar and Budgam regions in Kashmir Valley; and Poonch, Rajouri, and Reasi in Jammu will be contested.

For the third phase of elections, the notification will be issued on September 5, and the last date for filing the nominations has been fixed as September 12.

In the final round, voting will be held in Baramulla, Kupwara and other areas of North Kashmir; and Jammu and Kathua in the Jammu Division.

Overall, the total number of electors in J&K stands at 87.09 lakh, which includes 44.6 male and 42.62 lakh female voters.

The dates have been announced months after the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi won a third consecutive mandate but the size of his ruling coalition was trimmed. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) slipped behind the halfway majority mark. However, it was able to form the government with support from smaller constituents of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
