Free Aadhaar card data updation: Deadline extended; check last date and how to update

The deadline for free updation of Aadhaar details has been extended till June 14, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) stated on its social media handle on Tuesday, March 12.

“UIDAI extends free online document upload facility till 14th June 2024; to benefit millions of Aadhaar holders. This free service is available only on the myAadhaar portal. UIDAI has been encouraging people to keep documents updated in their Aadhaar,” it tweeted.

The earlier deadline for free Aadhaar updation was scheduled to expire on March 14. The details included in the Aadhaar card, such as name, father’s name, and age could be updated in case of any discrepancy, whereas, details such as residential address are encouraged to be updated if the cardholder has changed his location.

The updation of Aadhaar details is essential for authentication, and to avoid any potential hindrance in access to direct-benefit transfer schemes of the government.

Aadhaar, which comes with a 12-digit unique ID number, is based on biometric details. The project to issue the Aadhaar cards was launched by the Centre in 2009, and has since been used to eliminate fakery and leakage of subsidies.

How to update Aadhaar for free?

• Visit the official website - https://myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in/portal
• Use your Aadhaar number for login, and enter a one-time password (OTP) for authentication.
• Start updating your details by clicking on 'Document Update'
• In case of any mismatch or incorrect details, choose the document type from the drop-down menu and upload the document.
• A 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) will be generated after the document is submitted.

What documents are required to update Aadhaar for free?

• You will need documents for address and identity proof, which include any government-issued ID card, ration card, voter ID, passport, kisan photo passbook, certificate having address and certificate of disability.
• Documents for proof of identity: PAN card, driving licence, secondary or senior school mark sheet, government-issued identity card, school leaving certificate with photograph and freedom fighter photo identity card.
• Documents for proof of address: Electricity bill or gas bill pertaining to the past three months, rent or lease agreement, property tax receipt, medical insurance policy and bank or post office passbook are among the permissible documents.
