SUMMARY
The government has increased the price of LPG cylinders by ₹50 for both general consumers and Ujjwala scheme beneficiaries.
The price of 14.2-kg LPG cylinder will increase from Rs 803 to Rs 853 for general users and from Rs 503 to Rs 553 per 14.2 kg cylinder for users under the Ujwalla scheme.
Cooking gas or LPG prices have been hiked by ₹50 per cylinder across all consumer categories, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Monday.
The revised prices will see the cost of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder for general category users rise from ₹803 to ₹853, while beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) will now pay ₹553, up from ₹503.
"The price per cylinder of LPG will increase by ₹50. From ₹500, it will go up to ₹550 (for PMUY beneficiaries) and for others it will go up from ₹803 to ₹853," Puri told reporters.
Calling the revision a periodic measure, the minister said the decision would be reviewed regularly. "We review these every 2-3 weeks," he added.
Puri clarified that the excise duty increase on petrol and diesel is not being passed on to consumers, but is instead aimed at offsetting the losses incurred by oil marketing companies.
"That excise increase is intended to compensate the oil marketing companies for ₹43,000 crore that they have incurred as a loss on the gas part of it," he said.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas posted on X: "PSU Oil Marketing Companies have informed that there will be no increase in retail prices of #Petrol and #Diesel, subsequent to the increase effected in Excise Duty Rates today."
