Speaking at an event in the capital, Krishnan said 17 proposals from a pool of 249 have been cleared in the latest round, including the first-ever investment under the scheme from Jammu & Kashmir.

Other approved applications are from companies based in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and several other states.

“The basic objective is to deepen the value chain in India. The world is looking at diversification of value chains, and India is a key player in that,” Krishnan said.

Ten of the 17 approvals include major investments from Aequs Consumer Products Pvt Ltd (₹1,500 crore), TE Connectivity India Pvt Ltd (₹612 crore), Jabil Circuit India Pvt Ltd (₹957 crore), Zetfab/Zetchem (₹55 crore), Micropack Pvt Ltd (₹54 crore), Uno Minda (₹264 crore), Syrma Mobility Pvt Ltd (₹250 crore), and SMeena Electrotech Pvt Ltd (J&K) (₹111 crore).

The approvals follow the Centre’s earlier clearance of seven projects worth ₹5,532 crore last month under the same scheme.

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had then said these projects are expected to cut India’s electronics component import bill by nearly ₹20,000 crore.

“Seven plants under electronics components have been approved. In the coming days, many more projects will be approved,” Vaishnaw had said, adding that the proposals include manufacturing of multi-layer PCBs, camera modules, copper laminates and polypropylene films.

The minister had also highlighted that camera modules will be manufactured in India for the first time without foreign technology support, for use in smartphones, tablets, laptops and CCTV equipment.

Among the approved projects, Kaynes Group secured four clearances totalling ₹3,280 crore for multi-layer PCBs, HDI PCBs and camera module sub-assemblies.

Vaishnaw had said the PCB projects approved so far would meet 27% of India’s domestic demand, while camera module production will meet 15% of the country’s requirement.

Copper laminates and polypropylene films manufactured under the approved proposals are expected to meet the entire domestic demand.

The ECMS has so far attracted investment proposals worth ₹1.15 lakh crore.
