Addressing a press conference, Vaishnaw said the plant will be the sixth semiconductor unit sanctioned under the India Semiconductor Mission.

Five semiconductor units are already in advanced stages of construction and production at one unit will begin this year, he said.

The new unit will be set up near Jewar Airport in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) region. It will manufacture display driver chips used in mobile phones, laptops, automobiles, PCs and other devices with display interfaces.

Designed to handle 20,000 wafers per month for Wafer Level Packaging, the plant will have the capacity to produce up to 36 million chips monthly.

"Semiconductor industry is now shaping up across the country," a government release said. "World class design facilities have come up in many states across the country. State governments are vigorously pursuing the design firms."
