The decision was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to an official statement, the 6.032-km corridor will comprise five stations: Ashram Road, Koteshwar Prachin Mandir, Sabarmati River, Sardar Nagar and Airport.

Of these, four stations will be elevated and one will be underground.

The total completion cost of the project, including interest during construction (IDC), has been pegged at ₹2,169.04 crore.

With the commissioning of Phase 2A, the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro network will expand to 77.63 km of operational lines.

The government said the new corridor is aimed at improving public transport connectivity to the airport while linking residential and commercial areas that currently lack efficient mass transit access.

The project will also integrate with the existing Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar metro network.

The statement noted that the corridor could support future infrastructure requirements linked to major international sporting events, including the proposed World Police Games in 2029 and the Commonwealth Games in 2030.

The government said the metro expansion is expected to reduce road traffic congestion, improve travel times and enhance road safety by providing an efficient alternative mode of transport.

It added that the project would also contribute to lowering carbon emissions by encouraging greater use of public transport.

According to the statement, improved connectivity to key transport hubs such as the airport, railway stations and bus depots is expected to boost economic activity, facilitate business growth and attract investments in previously less accessible areas.

The project is also expected to generate employment for around 2,000 people during the peak construction phase, while about 500 personnel are likely to be engaged in the operation and maintenance of the system after commissioning.

The government said the metro expansion would improve access to affordable public transport for a wider section of the population and contribute to better urban mobility and quality of life in Ahmedabad.
