Bank holidays in May 2024: Banks to remain closed for up to 14 days; check state-wise list

Bank holidays in May 2024: Banks will remain closed for around 14 days in May 2024 on account of public holidays, Lok Sabha elections, second and fourth Saturdays and Sundays. The date of closures differs from state to state depending on the notification for a public holiday issued by the respective provincial government.

According to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) holiday calendar, up to 14 bank holidays will be observed in May 1.

Holidays in May include Maharashtra Day/May Day, the birthday of Rabindranath Tagore, Basava Jayanti/Akshaya Tritiya, Buddha Purnima, Nazrul Jayanti, Sikkim Day and voting dates of general elections.

May 2024 Bank holidays state-wise list

• May 1 (Wednesday): For Maharashtra Day and May Day (Labour Day), banks will be closed in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Telangana, West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala and Goa.

• May 7 (Tuesday): Banks will be in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Goa for Lok Sabha elections.

• May 8 (Wednesday): Banks will be shut in West Bengal for Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti

• May 10 (Friday): On this date, banks will be shut in Karnataka on account of Basava Jayanti/Akshaya Tritiya.

• May 13 (Tuesday): A Bank holiday has been notified in Srinagar for general elections.

• May 16 (Thursday): On this date, banks will remain closed in Sikkim for State Day.

• May 20: Bank holiday has been notified in Maharashtra for general elections.

• May 23: On account of Buddha Purnima, banks will remain closed in Mizoram, Tripura, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow, Jammu, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, New Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand and Srinagar.

• May 25: Banks will be shut in Tripura and Orissa on the occasion of Nazrul Jayanti.

Stock Market holidays in May

The BSE and the National Stock Exchange will be closed for a total of two days in May. The bourses will be shut on May 1 (Maharashtra Day) and May 20 (Lok Sabha elections), when voting will be held in Mumbai – the city where the two main exchanges are located. The equity, equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and interest rate derivatives segments will be shut for trading.
