Banks in many parts of India will remain closed today, October 7, on the occasion of Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti and Kumar Purnima. In India, bank holidays vary from state to state, as different regions celebrate different holidays, while all banks across the country remain shut on Sundays and second and fourth Saturdays of every month.
On Tuesday, October 7, banks will remain closed in Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha and Chandigarh, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) calendar.
The Uttar Pradesh government has also declared October 7 as a public holiday for Valmiki Jayanti. While the holiday is not mentioned in the RBI calendar, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a state-wide holiday.
Valmiki Jayanti is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Maharshi Valmiki, the sage and author of the Hindu epic Ramayana.
Kumar Purnima is celebrated specifically in the state of Odisha on the full moon day of Ashwin to commemorate the birth of Lord Kartikeya, the god of war. It is known to be a celebration of youth and dreams.

Though banks will be shut on holidays, online or mobile banking services will function as usual, unless notified otherwise. Further, ATMs will be open for cash withdrawals during emergencies, and UPI services will also be available.
October, being a month of festivities, has three stock market holidays as well on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti), October 21 (Diwali) and October 22 (Balipratipada).
