Bank holiday today: Banks closed in THESE cities in view of Lok Sabha elections 2024 phase 5 voting

Bank holiday today: As per the holiday calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India, the banks will remain shut on May 20 in Maharashtra capital Mumbai, neighbouring suburban region of Belapur (Navi Mumbai), and Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow.

Banks, including public and private, will remain closed in a few cities on Monday, May 20, in view of the fifth phase of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024. The voting, in this round of the polls, is being held in 49 parliamentary constituencies spread across six states and two union territories.

The lenders would not remain shut in all the 49 constituencies where the voting is scheduled today. As per the holiday calendar issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the closure of commercial banks has been confirmed only in three cities.

Banks closed in these cities on May 20

As per the list issued by the RBI in its holiday calendar, the banks are closed in the following three cities:

  • Mumbai, the state capital of Maharashtra
  • Belapur (Navi Mumbai), the satellite city which is part of the poll-bound Thane parliamentary constituency
  • Lucknow, the state capital of Uttar Pradesh

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) and the BSE – the country’s two main bourses – also declared a holiday on May 20. Both the exchanges are based in Mumbai, where all the six parliamentary constituencies are being contested in this round of the elections.

List of state-wise seats being contested in fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections 2024

  • Uttar Pradesh: Kaushambi (SC), Rae Bareli, Jhansi, Gonda, Mohanlalganj (SC), Banda, Jalaun, Lucknow, Kaiserganj, Hamirpur, Faizabad, Barabanki (SC), Fatehpur, Amethi
  • Maharashtra: Mumbai South, Mumbai North-Central, Kalyan, Mumbai North, Mumbai North-East, Thane, Dhule, Mumbai North-West, Mumbai South-Central, Bhiwandi, Nashik, Palghar, Dindori
  • Bihar: Muzaffarpur, Saran, Sitamarhi, Hajipur (SC), Madhubani
  • West Bengal: Srerampur, Bangaon, Barrackpur, Howrah, Hooghly, Uluberia, Arambagh
  • Jharkhand: Hazaribagh, Kodarma, Chatra
  • Odisha: Bolangir, Aska, Kandhamal, Bargarh, Sundargarh
  • Jammu & Kashmir: Baramulla
  • Ladakh: Ladakh

Notably, schools and colleges will remain closed in all the 49 constituencies where the voting is scheduled today. Several government offices would also remain shut, whereas private offices have been asked by the Election Commission to allow their employees to take a paid leave on the voting day.

After the fifth phase of the voting on May 20, the sixth round of the elections will be held on May 25 and the final round on June 1. The counting of votes has been scheduled on June 4.
