The January line-up of Indian harvest festivals has begun, starting with Lohri on January 13 and Makar Sankranti on January 14. Banks in many states across the country will remain shut on January 14 and 15, as per the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar.

For Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu, banks will remain closed on January 14 in Gujarat, Odisha, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. On Thursday, January 15, banks will remain shut on the occasion of Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Sikkim.

While physical branches of banks remain closed on holidays, online banking services like NEFT/IMPS and internet banking, along with UPI services and ATM withdrawals, function as usual. 

Market holiday on January 15

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain closed for trading on Thursday, January 15, on account of municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra.

"In partial modification to Exchange circular reference no. NSE/CMTR/71775, the Exchange hereby notifies Thursday, January 15, 2026, as a trading holiday in the Capital Market (CM) Segment on account of Municipal Corporation Election in Maharashtra," the NSE said in a circular on Monday, January 12. 

The commodity derivatives segment will also be closed for the morning session on Thursday, while it will remain open for the evening session from 5 pm to 11:55 pm.
