SUMMARY

The RBI has stated that these holidays are specific to certain states, meaning banks will function normally in states where no festival holiday has been declared. Customers in such regions can continue in-branch transactions without any interruptions.

The holidays are announced under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which allows regional holidays depending on festivals, religious observances or other local customs.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the official list of bank holidays for August 2025. As per the announcement, the public and private sector banks will remain closed on 3 different days this week in some parts of the country. These holidays are announced under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which allows regional holidays depending on festivals, religious observances or other local customs. Note: These bank closures are not for the entire country, and that banks will remain operational in states where no holiday has been declared.
On Monday, August 2025, banks in Guwahati will remain closed on the occasion of the Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardev. Sankardev, who lived between 1449 and 1568, was a saint, philosopher, poet and social reformer. His contributions continue to hold deep cultural and spiritual importance in Assam, and his death anniversary is observed with great devotion. To mark this occasion, banks in Guwahati will not operate for the day.
On Wednesday, August 27, banks in several major cities, including Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji and Vijayawada will remain closed on account of Ganesh Chaturthi. In some cities, other observances like Samvatsari and Ganesh Puja will also fall on the same date, leading to a complete suspension of banking services in those locations.
On Thursday, August 28, banks in Bhubaneswar will observe a holiday for Nuakhai, a festival that marks the harvest season, while banks in Panaji will remain shut for the second day of Ganesh Chaturthi. This means banking services in these regions will also remain suspended.

The RBI has stated that these holidays are specific to certain states, meaning banks will function normally in states where no festival holiday has been declared. Customers in such regions can continue in-branch transactions without any interruptions.

Digital banking services, including internet banking, mobile banking, UPI payments and ATMs, will remain accessible even during holidays. Customers can use these channels for transfers, payments, and other transactions. However, physical processes like cheque clearing, fund settlements and activities under the Negotiable Instruments Act will not be conducted on the declared holidays.
