Exports in September alone touched $1.25 billion, more than double the $490 million recorded in the same month last year, the newspaper said, adding that the growth came despite strong domestic demand for the newly launched iPhone 17 series.

The Cupertino-based company’s export volumes typically rise from September as new models hit global markets and demand picks up during the year-end holiday season, the report said.

Apple’s ramp-up in India has been driven by the addition of Tata Electronics’ plant in Hosur and Foxconn’s Bengaluru facility, bringing the total number of iPhone production units in the country to five.

Apple produced $22 billion worth of iPhones in India in fiscal 2025, of which about $17.5 billion, or 80%, were exported.

Production of iPhones in India has risen sharply from $2 billion in FY22.

India has become an increasingly important manufacturing base for Apple amid global supply-chain diversification efforts, despite US President Donald Trump’s pressure to shift the manufacturing back to the United States.

The United States remains the largest market for smartphone exports from India, accounting for $8.43 billion worth of shipments between April and August, up from $2.88 billion a year earlier, according to data from industry body India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) cited by the paper.

Nikkei Asia recently reported that Apple Inc. was in talks with suppliers for building a pilot production line for a foldable iPhone in Taiwan, with plans to shift mass production of the device to India as early as next year.

The tech giant is aiming for over 10% growth in iPhone shipments in 2026 and believes the introduction of a folding model could drive demand.

The Taiwan pilot line is reportedly intended to help engineers and suppliers verify equipment, refine processes and prepare for smooth mass production in India.
