According to the report, the latest round of layoffs led to the elimination of some engineering roles, and has also hit the team manages Apple News.

The digital services group of Apple, wherein the company has reportedly slashed jobs, employed 161,000 full-time staff as of September 30, 2023.

Tech layoffs

Tech companies, including the Silicon Valley-based sectoral giants, have significantly laid off their employees in the post-COVID-19 period.

According to a tracker maintained by Layoffs.fyi, tech firms have axed over 124,000 jobs as of August 20, 2024. The overall tally of layoffs since 2022 has crossed 428,400.

Earlier this month, Intel, one of the world's leading chipmakers, said it plans to phase out around 15% or 18,000 members of its workforce as part of a move to streamline operations.

The statement was issued by the company's top executives following the release of the results of the recently concluded second quarter. The tech giant logged a loss of approximately $1.6 billion during the quarter.

In April, Google spokesperson Alex García-Kummert told a tech news portal that the employee count has been brought down in three internal teams.

The exact count of employees laid off by Google, as part of the layoff exercise, was not revealed. Notably, the company had sacked around 12,000 employees in 2023, and had announced that the layoffs in 2024 would be carried out in a phased manner.
