The announcement was made after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

“Really enjoyed my meeting with Prime Minister @narendramodi about what’s ahead for Amazon in India,” Jassy said on X. “Shared that we’re investing $48 billion over the coming five years, including $21+ billion in AI and cloud infrastructure.”

He said that Amazon plans to support 3.8 million jobs in India, enable $80 billion in cumulative e-commerce exports, bring AI benefits to 15 million small businesses, and provide AI education to 4 million government school students by 2030.

According to the company, its cumulative investments in India during 2010-2030 will exceed $88 billion.

The latest $13 billion investment will be used to expand Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centre capacity in Mumbai and Hyderabad.

According to the company, the investment will help startups, enterprises and government organisations in India access AI chips, managed AI services, cloud technologies and developer tools.

Amazon said it will also continue to invest in its e-commerce and quick commerce network in India.

The company plans to open more than 20 new fulfilment centres and over 100 last-mile delivery stations across the country this year, with a focus on improving delivery speed and reach, especially in tier-3 and tier-4 cities.

“We are investing over $48 billion in the coming five years to meet the strong demand across our business in India and to help the country achieve these priorities,” Jassy said in a statement.

He said Amazon’s business in India has seen strong growth, especially in e-commerce, AI and cloud services.

Prime Minister Modi welcomed the investment announcement and said it showed the growing interest across the world to invest in India.

In a post on X after the meeting, Modi said he welcomed Amazon’s “record $48 billion investment in India”, adding that it would create new opportunities for the country’s youth.
