IndiGo, the country’s largest airline, also said dense fog continued to affect visibility at Delhi and other airports across northern India, leading to delays, schedule changes and cancellations.

“Prolonged low visibility during the morning hours has impacted air traffic movement, and as a result, some flights have been cancelled to ensure safe and compliant operations through the rest of the day,” IndiGo said in a post on X.

The airline said impacted customers were being informed in advance via WhatsApp and email, and were being offered options to rebook or claim refunds.

IndiGo also shared a detailed list of cancelled flights across multiple domestic sectors for December 15.

The flight disruptions came as Delhi remained engulfed in a thick blanket of smog. The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 498 on Monday, falling in the higher spectrum of the ‘severe’ category.

According to official data, air quality was ‘severe’ at 38 monitoring stations and ‘very poor’ at two stations, with Jahangirpuri recording the worst AQI of 498 among the 40 stations.

The India Meteorological Department said weak winds, with an average speed of less than 10 kmph, and low temperatures were unfavourable for the dispersion of pollutants. Delhi’s air quality is likely to remain in the ‘severe’ to ‘very poor’ category over the next few days, according to the Air Quality Early Warning System.

Meanwhile, the IMD forecast the maximum temperature in the national capital to hover around 25 degrees Celsius during the day.
