The project, developed by Adani Green Energy Twenty Five A Ltd, a wholly-owned step-down subsidiary, has commenced power generation from February 28, the company said in a regulatory filing.

With this, AGEL has reinforced its position as India’s largest renewable energy company and the first in the country to surpass the 12,000 MW milestone. The company’s portfolio now comprises 8,347.5 MW of solar, 1,651 MW of wind, and 2,259.6 MW of wind-solar hybrid capacity.

The latest commissioning adds to the rapid development of AGEL’s Khavda renewable energy plant on the barren wasteland in Kutch, which is set to become the world's largest renewable energy project with a planned capacity of 30,000 MW.

“Built across 538 sq kms, it is five times the size of Paris and almost as large as Mumbai city. Once complete, it will be the planet's largest power plant across all energy sources,” AGEL said in a release.

So far, the company has operationalised 2,824.1 MW at the site.

The 12,258.1 MW capacity is expected to power over 6.2 million homes and help avoid 22.64 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, equivalent to the carbon sequestration of 1,078 million trees, AGEL said.

The company aims to scale up its renewable energy portfolio to 50,000 MW by 2030, in line with India’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity.

Work at the Khavda site is progressing rapidly with support from Adani Infra, Adani New Industries Ltd, Adani Infrastructure Management Services Ltd, and its strategic partners, the company added.

Shares of AGEL were trading in red on the stock exchanges on Friday amid a broader selloff.
