India's urban unemployment rate fell to a one-year low of 6.4% in May 2026 from 6.6% in April.

India's urban unemployment rate fell to a one-year low in May at 6.4%, government data showed on Monday.

However, labour force participation and employment ratios eased, suggesting some softening in overall labour market conditions.

The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for persons aged 15 years and above stood at 54.4% in May 2026, down from 55% in April 2026 and 54.8% in May last year, according to the latest monthly bulletin of the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the Ministry of Statistics.

The worker population ratio (WPR), which measures the proportion of employed persons in the population, fell to 51.4% in May from 52.2% in April and 51.7% a year earlier.

The urban unemployment rate for people aged 15 years and above declined to 6.4% in May from 6.6% in April and 6.9% a year earlier.

Female urban unemployment fell to 8.2% in May from 8.5% in April, while the rate for urban men remained unchanged at 5.9%.

In urban areas, the WPR was largely stable at 46.6% compared with 46.8% in April, while the urban LFPR stood at 49.8%.

Female labour force participation in urban areas remained largely unchanged at 24.8% in May from the previous month, although it was 0.5 percentage points lower than a year earlier.

The overall unemployment rate at the national level was estimated at 5.5% in May.

Rural unemployment rose marginally to 5.1% from 4.6% in April, while urban unemployment eased.

The statistics ministry said the moderation in labour force participation and employment, along with a rise in unemployment, pointed to a “softening of labour market conditions” during the month.

"While labour force participation declined marginally, employment opportunities contracted at a faster pace, leading to a rise in the proportion of unemployed persons within the labour force," the ministry said.

“The decline in labour market indicators may be linked to a seasonal moderation in economic activity during May 2026,” it added.

The monthly estimates were based on responses from 373,887 people surveyed across India, including 213,294 in rural areas and 160,593 in urban centres.
