India's industrial output grows 2.7% in April 2025, down from 5.2% a year ago: Govt data

India's industrial production growth slowed to 2.7% in April 2025 from the revised 3.9% in March, according to official data released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Wednesday.

On an annual basis, the growth in April was down from 5.2% in the corresponding month of the previous fiscal.

The Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) for April 2025 stood at 152.0, up from 148.0 in the same month a year earlier.

The manufacturing segment registered a growth of 3.4%, while electricity generation rose by 1.1%. However, the mining sector contracted by 0.2% in April.

Of the 23 industry groups within the manufacturing sector, 16 recorded positive growth.

The key drivers were "Manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c." which grew 17%, "Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers" which expanded 15.4%, and "Manufacture of basic metals" which rose 4.9%.

As per use-based classification, capital goods posted the highest growth of 20.3%, followed by consumer durables (6.4%), intermediate goods (4.1%), and infrastructure/construction goods (4.0%). On the other hand, primary goods and consumer non-durables contracted by 0.4% and 1.7%, respectively.

The indices for various use-based categories stood at 151.6 (primary goods), 114.3 (capital goods), 164.2 (intermediate goods), 191.6 (infrastructure/construction goods), 127.2 (consumer durables), and 148.4 (consumer non-durables).

The National Statistics Office (NSO) revised upwards industrial production growth for March to 3.9% from the earlier estimate of 3% released last month. The IIP growth was 2.7 in February also.
