Prime Minister Narendra Modi released the 16th instalment of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme on Wednesday. The scheme has now benefitted more than 11 crore eligible farmer families, with ₹3 lakh crores disbursed to date.

Since its launch on February 2, 2019, the PM-KISAN scheme has aimed to provide positive supplementary income support to farmer families across India. Under this initiative, eligible farmer families receive ₹6000 annually, disbursed in three equal instalments of ₹2000 each, every four months, directly into their bank accounts.

In a recent development, as part of the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra, the scheme added 90 lakh new beneficiaries. Over the last five years, PM-KISAN has garnered praise from various quarters, including organisations like the World Bank, for its vision, scale and efficient fund transfer mechanism.

To enhance transparency and efficiency, the scheme leverages modern digital technology. Continuous improvements in a farmer-centric digital infrastructure have been made, integrating the PM-KISAN portal with various government portals. Farmers can register grievances and seek resolution through the PM-KISAN portal and a 24x7 call facility.
