The issue has gained attention on X, where tax professionals and other users are tagging the Income Tax Department and senior government officials with requests to look into the deadline. The online campaign comes alongside representations from professional bodies seeking an extension of the tax-audit deadline to October 31.

What exactly is the deadline?

For taxpayers whose accounts are required to be audited, the income-tax return for AY 2026-27 is generally due by October 31, 2026. The tax-audit report, however, is required earlier, with September 30 being the applicable date.

This one-month gap is at the centre of the current demand for an extension.

Why do professionals want more time?

Tax professionals say completing a tax audit involves much more than submitting a report.

Books of accounts have to be checked against GST records, TDS and TCS information, AIS, TIS, Form 26AS, bank statements and other financial records. Discrepancies need to be investigated, supporting documents obtained and multiple disclosures reviewed before the audit can be finalised.

The September compliance calendar is also packed, with several tax and other statutory requirements falling around the same period.

Professionals have additionally pointed to issues relating to tax utilities, technical difficulties and the time required to incorporate changes and complete the new reporting requirements.

Why is #ExtendTaxAuditDueDate trending now?

With September 30 only days away, the demand for an extension has moved from formal representations to social media. The hashtag #ExtendTaxAuditDueDate is being used by tax professionals to collectively highlight the pressure they say they are facing.

The campaign is essentially asking for additional time to complete the same compliance requirements with adequate checking and verification.

What are professional bodies asking for?

Several professional bodies have requested that the tax-audit report deadline be moved from September 30 to October 31, 2026.

Some have also sought a corresponding extension of the ITR filing deadline for audit cases to November 30, 2026.

If granted, the proposal would give professionals an additional month to complete audit work before the return-filing stage.

Has the government extended the deadline?

Not yet. As of September 22, 2026, September 30 remains the applicable tax-audit deadline. The October 31 date being discussed is a request from professional bodies and tax professionals, not an officially notified extension.

Until the CBDT announces any change, taxpayers covered by tax audit should continue to work towards the existing September 30 deadline.

For now, #ExtendTaxAuditDueDate is trending because the tax professional community is asking for more time to complete a detailed compliance exercise before the September 30 cut-off.
