SBI, BoB, PNB, Canara to Union Bank: Total accountholders, deposits, loans of 12 PSBs compared

SBI is followed by Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India and others, according to data shared by the Finance Ministry in the Lok Sabha on July 20, 2026.

There are 12 PSBs in the country and there is no plan to privatise them.

State Bank of India (SBI) leads all 12 public sector banks (PSBs) in the country in terms of the number of account holders, total deposits, and outstanding credit (loans). It has also added the highest number of account holders since FY 2021-22 compared with other PSBs.

According to data shared by the Finance Ministry in the Lok Sabha on July 20, 2026, SBI is followed by Bank of Baroda, Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Union Bank of India and others.

Here are the bank-wise details for FY 2025-26:

State Bank of India: SBI had 53.03 crore account holders. From its domestic business, the bank had total deposits of ₹57,32,960 crore and total credit outstanding of ₹41,89,686 crore. The number of SBI accountholders has jumped by around 7 crore since FY 2021-22.
Bank of Baroda: BoB had 18.93 crore account holders. From its domestic business, the bank had total deposits of ₹14,01,290 crore and total credit outstanding of ₹11,69,458 crore. The number of BoB accountholders has jumped by over 3 crore since FY 2021-22.
Punjab National Bank: PNB had 18.53 crore account holders. From its domestic business, the bank had total deposits of ₹16,49,060 crore and total credit outstanding of ₹11,92,950 crore. The number of PNB accountholders has increased by nearly 72 lakh since FY 2021-22.
Canara Bank: This bank had 10.69 crore account holders. From its domestic business, the bank had total deposits of ₹14,36,905 crore and total credit outstanding of ₹11,61,143 crore. The number of Canara Bank accountholders has also increased by nearly 1 crore since FY 2021-22.
Union Bank of India: UBI had 16.4 crore account holders. From its domestic business, the bank had total deposits of ₹13,06,288 crore and total credit outstanding of ₹10,40,954 crore. The number of UBI accountholders has increased by nearly 35 lakh since FY 2021-22.

No plan to privatise

According to the Finance Ministry, currently there is no proposal under consideration by the government to privatise any of the 12 PSBs. "Presently, there is no such proposal under consideration of the Government on privatization of Public Sector Banks," the Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, said in response to a written reply to a query in the Lok Sabha.
