The US market's earnings season is turning out to be quite eventful, with megacap earnings surprising on the downside. After a slew of megacap earnings this week, the US benchmark indices turned lower on Wednesday and Thursday. The NASDAQ 100 futures further fell over 1.4% on Friday morning, as overnight earnings releases indicated weakness and disappointment against expectations. The September quarter earnings have largely remained muted for tech companies, delivering below-estimate top-line and bottomline performance.

Besides this, investor apprehensions surged as questions arose about the viability of massive AI investments. Consequently, investors chose to rotate their investments from the trending AI-led ecosystem tech and chip stocks to defensive bets in the consumer, retail, and financial sectors. The tech-heavy NASDAQ 100 index plunged 3.3% in October, after touching fresh record highs. On the flip side, the Dow Jones surged 2.8% for the month, amid bargain hunting in the defensive stocks in the Dow Jones index.

Sector rotation: From AI to Consumer, retail and Financial services

The NASDAQ’s loss was largely led by semiconductor and tech stocks, which fell in high double digits in October. The major losers for this month in the semiconductor industry included names like Intel Corporation (-21%), Marvel Technology (-15.5%), Micron Technology (-13.3%), Advanced Micro Devices (-8.1%), NVIDIA (-7.4%), and Broadcom (-3%). Among the megacap names, Alphabet plunged over 16% this month, followed by Meta Platforms at -14%.

On the other hand, shares of retail and consumer-focused companies like Home Depot (+13%), Walmart (+12%), McDonald's (+10.8%), Procter & Gamble Company (+8.5%), Coca-Cola Company (+7.2%), and Nike (+5.2%) were the top gainers this month. Apart from these, shares of financial services names like Visa Inc (+11.9%) and American Express Company (+5.4%) also surged this month. Investors chose sectoral rotation from overheated technology stocks to defensive bets in retail, consumption, banking, and financial services.

What's driving the fall in tech stocks?

The apprehensions over overheated valuations in the technology and semiconductor space are growing day by day as the companies fail to deliver any meaningful outcome on the massive AI-led capex investments.

Alphabet Inc's cloud revenue doubled, but its profits fell 26%, and it recorded a negative free cash flow of $9 billion. Despite this, the company is pegged to invest $195-$200 billion in AI capex, and plans to expand it further to $300 billion in 2027. Besides this, Alphabet’s debt rose substantially to $125 billion in this quarter. Investors worry that elevated debt levels in a high-interest-rate scenario could adversely affect the company’s earnings going forward.
Amazon delivered below-estimate earnings this year and yet continued to spend over $150 billion in AI capex investments as core earnings growth remains. Amazon also added $75 billion in debt in the first nine months of 2026 and borrowed $30 billion in Q3 alone. Investors remain watchful of the elevated debt levels and their impact on cash flow. Amazon’s trailing twelve-month cash flow remains -$42 billion, largely driven by higher capital expenditures for Artificial Intelligence projects.
Intel Corporation, one of the key chip and processor makers, also announced disappointing numbers for the quarter and lowered its guidance and outlook for the coming quarter owing to poor demand in the PC segment. Intel Corporation's Q4 revenue came at $15 billion, below analyst expectations. Furthermore, the gross margins dipped to 38% from 44% in the previous quarter. However, despite the bleak outlook, the company announced $20 billion in capex investments for its foundry business.

In summary

The US stock markets trade at an inflection point where the tech companies have to invest heavily to run the AI operations until it delivers meaningful outcomes, at a time when the cost of capital rises to multi-year highs. Investors are now increasingly turning away from investing incrementally into the AI theme, which is generating negative cash flow with heavy investments and rotating their investments into positive cash flow defensive bets in the consumer, retail, and financial services sectors.
