US stock market today: Tech stocks pull NASDAQ 100 nearly 300 pts lower; Dow Jones trades in green

The US stock market opened mixed on Monday, extending its previous week’s trend. While Dow Jones opened in green with 100 points gain, the NASDAQ 100 fell 270 points and the S&P 500 plunged over 20 points on Monday.

The buoyancy in the industrial and the financial services stocks lifted the Dow Jones. Shares of Nvidia, Apple Inc, Amazon Inc, Micron Technology opened in red with losses of up to 1%. On the flipside, shares of Alphabet Inc, Microsoft Corporation, Space Exploration Technology, and Tesla surged as much as 5% on Monday.

The crude oil prices snapped the previous day’s gains on Monday as US plans for toughest sanctions on Iran. The Brent crude oil prices slipped 2.3% below $91 per barrel mark. Meanwhile, the WTI crude oil prices fell 1.3% below $86 per barrel on Monday.

The shares in Europe traded in red on Monday, amid weak global market cues. The benchmark indices of Germany, UK, France and European Union fell as much as 0.3% on Monday evening, taking the cues from weak closing in the Asian markets. The Korean KOSPI fell 3%, the most amongst the Asian peers, followed by Shanghai Composite at 2.7% and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index at 1.9%.

Meanwhile, the US 10-Y bond yields fell after two consecutive days of rally as investors shifted their focus on Kevin Warsh’s commentary at the Jackson Hole Symposium scheduled for on Friday. Apart from this, the key macroeconomic indicators also remain in focus, which could determine the investor sentiment for the coming week. The personal consumption expenditures index (PCE) numbers will be released on Wednesday, a preferred gauge of inflation by the Federal Reserve, could provide next cues for inflation expectations.
